A Rose That Lasts: for those who have held you through life’s most important moments

How the Inspiration Came Alive

Some connections in life feel almost impossible — like they weren’t planned, but somehow meant to happen.

When you give birth at a hospital where doctors rotate through night shifts, you don’t expect to see the same doctor more than once. Each delivery is uncertain in its own way, and you prepare to trust whoever is there in that moment.

But somehow, through the births of all three of my boys, Dr. Kung was the one who welcomed them into the world.

Even now, it feels surreal to say that.

Through three very different moments in my life — three pregnancies, three labors, three versions of myself — she was a steady presence. Calm, reassuring, and quietly strong in the moments when I needed it most. At the time, I don’t think I fully understood how rare that was. It was only with distance that I began to see it clearly.

Now, as she prepares to retire, I found myself wanting to hold onto that gratitude in a more tangible way.

I wanted to create something for her.

Not just a gift, but something that carries meaning — something that reflects both strength and gentleness, something that endures. I was drawn to the idea of a rose. A rose that doesn’t fade. A rose that holds its form, just like the kind of care that leaves a lasting imprint on your life.

So I created a necklace inspired by that idea.

Each element was chosen with intention, but more than that, it was created with feeling. As I worked on it, I found myself thinking about those moments in the delivery room — the uncertainty, the vulnerability, and the quiet trust placed in someone else’s hands.

The Stones Behind the Piece: This rose-inspired necklace features purple garnet, red hematoid quartz, and a luminous mauve freshwater pearl — each chosen for both their beauty and symbolism. The deep tones of garnet reflect strength and grounding, while hematoid quartz carries natural, petal-like inclusions that echo the organic form of a rose within the stone itself. The freshwater pearl adds a soft, nurturing glow, symbolizing care, femininity, and quiet resilience. Together, these natural gemstones create a piece that feels both powerful and gentle — much like the experience it represents.

When I finally dropped off the necklace, I didn’t expect anything in return. It was simply something I needed to do.

But later, she sent me a message.

She told me she wore it to work that day, and that the staff loved it too.

And for a moment, everything felt full circle.

A small piece of something I created, now carried into the same space where she had once held mine — my children, my fears, my strength. It felt like a quiet exchange of care, in a completely different form.

This necklace will never equal what she has given me.

But maybe that’s not the point.

Maybe some gestures are simply about acknowledging what cannot be repaid — only appreciated.

As she steps into her next chapter, I feel nothing but gratitude. For her presence, for her care, and for the unlikely, beautiful continuity of her being there for all three of my boys.

Some people leave a mark on your life that doesn’t fade.

And some roses are meant to last. 🌹🌹
